Add another big-name coach to the list of “possible” candidates for the now-it’s-officially-open Notre Dame job: North Carolina’s Butch Davis.
The Chicago Tribune lists Davis as one of the “favorites,” behind Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly, Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops and TCU’s Gary Patterson.
Certainly both Kelly and Patterson would likely both jump at the job as it’s a step up from their programs (despite the records). And certainly Notre Dame would be a step up from North Carolina, which while having great facilities will always be known as a basketball school.
It’s hard to see the Irish wanting Davis, however. He’s 58 years old and doesn’t really have any ties to the school or even the Midwest. Of course Davis rebuilt the Miami Hurricanes before leaving for the Cleveland Browns, which did not go so well. He now appears to have the Tar Heels on track. Davis does have a defensive background, and defense is the issue at Notre Dame, but most expect the Irish to grab a young coach who runs a spread offense, and that’s not Davis – that’s Kelly.
Meanwhile, Notre Dame will officially can Charlie Weis later on Monday, it has been reported.
Athletic director Jack Swarbrick will cut ties with Weis following a 6-6 season that ended Saturday with a 45-38 loss at Stanford. Weis has six years left on his contract and will be owed a whopping $18 million. In the last three years, Weis’ teams went 16-21 and never beat a ranked opponent. This past weekend against Stanford, Weis refused to do halftime and postgame media interviews. He reportedly cleaned out his office Thursday before the team left for the West Coast
The Irish players are voting today on whether to accept a lower-tier bowl invitation. A bowl game would be the last time, more than likely, that Irish fans would get to see both Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate.
