No. 2 Kansas is set to become the Big 12 regular-season champion and pretty much a lock for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but No. 5 Kansas State could steal a second top seed in the Big Dance for the state if it can pull the big upset in Lawrence tonight.
However, KU is a 9-point betting favorite on WagerWeb.com’s NCAA odds.
Kansas can win the outright Big 12 regular season title with a win, while Kansas State can go into the weekend with a chance to share the title if victorious. Of course the Jayhawks are nearly invincible at home, having won a nation’s best 58 straight games there. The streak ranks as the second longest in Kansas men’s basketball history. In addition, tonight is the final home game for senior guard Sherron Collins (and probably junior center Cole Aldrich), one of the best players in school history. Kansas has won 26 straight home season finales, which includes 25 Senior Nights (one season there were no seniors).
Collins leads the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game and has scored in double figures 23 times this season following his 22-point performance in a loss at Oklahoma State on Saturday that knocked KU from No. 1 in the polls. Collins has been part of the most wins in a four-year span in Kansas basketball history with 124 victories.
Aldrich led the Jayhawks with 18 points and had a game-high 11 boards and three blocks in Kansas’ 81-79 road overtime win at Kansas State earlier this year. Collins hit a layup with less than 10 seconds remaining to put the Jayhawks up by 3. KSU has won seven in a row since then. Junior guard Jacob Pullen leads K-State in scoring at 18.5 points per game, which ranks third in the Big 12. He had 22 in the first meeting with KU.
This will mark the seventh time this season that Kansas has played a ranked opponent, and the Jayhawks are 5-1.
The Wildcats have won six in a row on the road. Since 1983, KSU has won in Lawrence five times compared to a lone victory in Manhattan. The last time these two played with both ranked in the top five was in 1958. The Jayhawks are 31-2 against the Wildcats since the inception of the Big 12.
