Things are not going well for the Phoenix Suns. For a while there, the Suns looked like contenders in the Western Conference, especially with a 14-3 start to the season. But following Monday’s loss in Utah, the Suns are now 12-17 since the start of December, and they are 5-8 in January with only one win over a team currently with a winning record.
Perhaps a return home will help, but the Suns were just beaten by the Bulls there and have dropped three home games this month after losing just two before the New Year. Charlotte is playing much better of late but remains awful on the road at 3-17 – only the Nets have fewer road wins.
Thus Phoenix is a 5.5-point favorite tonight on WagerWeb.com’s NBA odds.
That Charlotte just dropped under .500 should bode well tonight for Phoenix, which is 16-3 against teams below .500 this season. Plus the Bobcats also are playing the second night of a back-to-back after losing in Denver on Monday. They have now dropped three straight games. Stephen Jackson has scored in double figures in all 34 games since joining Charlotte as part of a trade with Golden State, including 10 of 20 points or more. He led the way with 22 against Denver.
Steve Nash had 15 points and 15 assists on Monday in Utah, giving him 8,013 in his career and making him the eighth player in NBA history to surpass 8,000 assists. Goran Dragic scored a career high for the second straight game with 32. But once again the Suns defense was awful, as Utah’s 124 points were a season high for the Jazz.
Phoenix is one of three cities where the Bobcats have never won a regular-season game – Phoenix (0-5), New Orleans (0-5) and Dallas (0-6). But on Jan. 16 in Charlotte, the Bobcats laid a 125-99 beating on Phoenix. They held Nash to just five points and five assists. Jackson and Gerald Wallace each had 29 in that one to lead Charlotte. The Bobcats, who hit their first six 3-point shots, led 74-47 at halftime and Wallace already had 24 points. The Bobcats shot 50.5 percent in that game, but they’re averaging 89.5 points per contest while making 44.7 percent of their shots away from home.
