The Minnesota Twins could rarely beat the New York Yankees at the Metrodome, and so far their luck isn’t any better at the new Target Field.

The Yanks beat the Twins twice in four hours or so at Target Field on Wednesday, beating them 1-0 in a rain-delayed game and then 3-2 in the regularly scheduled one. The Twins went 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position over the two games. The Yankees were 0-for-14.

“We’re losing games to this team, but they’re not by a lot,” Twins outfielder Span said. “We’ve just got to find a way when we’re playing this team to take advantage of the opportunities we do get.”

The Yankees have won 11 of their last 12 regular-season games against the Twins, plus a three-game sweep last October in the playoffs. Of the past 14 games between these two teams, 11 have been decided by three runs or fewer.

“I know there’s been a lot made of that,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of his team’s dominance over the Twins. “We played 10 games against them last year, and all 10 of them seemed to go like tonight. We’ve been fortunate to be on the winning end. We could have been on the losing end of a lot of them. They’re a very good team, and we play a lot of tight games with them. It’s just the way it’s been.”

It will be interesting to see if Yanks closer Mariano Rivera is available tonight as he closed out both games on Wednesday. New York and Minnesota are basically a pick’em at -110 each on WagerWeb.com’s betting odds.

Minnesota starts Nick Blackburn (5-1, 4.50) tonight. He had a 6.85 ERA and allowed five earned runs in three straight outings in April. But he’s 4-0 in his past four starts (all in May) and has pitched at least seven innings while not allowing more than three runs in each.

New York starts Javier Vazquez (3-4, 6.69). He had his best start since returning to the Yankees last time out, allowing just a hit in six innings against the Mets before leaving the game with a bruised finger incurred on a bunt. Vazquez had only 70 pitches at the time. In 16 career starts against the Twins, Vazquez is 6-6 with a 5.11 ERA.
