What exactly do the Philadelphia 76ers have to gain by brining Allen Iverson back on a one-year, non-guaranteed contract?
We’re about to find out, because A.I. ended one of the shortest retirements in pro sports history and agreed on Wednesday morning to the deal for the pro-rated veteran’s minimum of $1.3 million.
“In light of the recent injury to Lou Williams, which will sideline him for close to eight weeks, we felt that Allen was the best available free agent guard to help us at this time,” team president Ed Stefanski said.
Iverson announced his retirement last week after a few games with the Memphis Grizzlies. Iverson played the first 10 seasons of his career in Philadelphia before playing in Denver, Detroit and Memphis. During his tenure in Philly, he led the league in scoring four times and took the team to the NBA Finals in 2001, the same year he won the league MVP. He is a 10-time All-Star.
Iverson’s last game with Philadelphia was on Dec. 6, 2006, in Chicago. He refused to play the fourth quarter and was banished from the team two days later. He was eventually traded to Denver as part of the Andre Miller deal, and bounced to Detroit before landing in Memphis.
Sure, he can replace Williams (rookie Jrue Holiday is not ready yet), but the Sixers are 5-13 and on a seven-game losing streak heading into Wednesday’s game with the Thunder – bet on it at WagerWeb.com. This is not a playoff team and Iverson isn’t exactly a good role model for all of the Sixers’ young players. For A.I., it’s a no-brainer because he has no other offers. Iverson is not expected to play until next Monday when the Sixers take on the Denver Nuggets – which is sort of ironic because that’s where he was banished the first time around.
Why do I think this doesn’t end well?
