Jake Delhomme leads the NFL in interceptions and the Carolina Panthers are huge long shots to make the playoffs sitting at 2-4, but Panthers coach John Fox, who is probably a lame duck himself, is sticking with Delhomme as his quarterback this week at Arizona.
The Cardinals are 10-point favorites on WagerWeb.com.
Remember it was Arizona that started this slump for Delhomme, as they picked off five of his passes and recovered a fumble in last year’s NFC divisional round upset at Carolina. And Delhomme clearly hasn’t been the same since. He has a rating of just 56.5 this season and 13 interceptions through six games, a pace of 35 for the season. That would tie Vinny Testaverde in 1988 for the second-most in a season in NFL history. Only George Blanda, with 42 interceptions in 1962, has had more in one season.
Delhomme has thrown at least one pick in every game and at least two in four games this season.
Including that Arizona game, last year he has five touchdowns and 18 interceptions in his last seven starts.
On Monday, Fox acknowledged he was contemplating benching Delhomme in favor of either Matt Moore or A.J. Feeley.
“I still believe Jake is our best quarterback. I have no reason to believe otherwise, truth be told,” Fox said Monday. “But collectively we’ll do whatever it takes for us to improve. What that is I can’t honestly tell you at this second.”
But the coach changed his tune Wednesday.
“We feel like he gives us the best chance to win,” Fox said of Delhomme. “Going through and looking at some of our mishaps I don’t think it’s one guy and I think he still gives us the best chance to win.”
In a way, Fox has no choice here because the Panthers have no QB of the future. Feeley is a career backup, while Moore is young but hasn’t played since his rookie year, when he went 2-1 in three starts down the stretch of the 2007 campaign.
