Not a ton of great NBA action on Monday night, but the Chicago-Milwaukee game is a bit intriguing because it matches two tremendous young point guards in the Bulls’ Derrick Rose, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, and the Bucks’ Brandon Jennings, the front-runner for this season’s rookie award.
Jennings, drafted 10th overall after going to Europe for a season instead of playing college basll, is averaging 22.3 points and 5.5 assists and shooting an amazing 48.6 percent on 3-pointers. An ankle injury kept Rose, who has been bothered some by an ankle injury, out of both preseason matchups against Jennings, but the two guards know each other well.
Jennings tallied 25 points, four assists and two turnovers in the Bulls’ two-point home victory on Nov. 3, while Rose had 16 points, five assists and five turnovers. Milwaukee is a 2.5-point favorite on WagerWeb.com this time.
“He puts a lot of pressure on you with his speed,” Chicago coach Vinny Del Negro said of Jennings. “He pushes the tempo, has floaters in the lane, shoots the three, keeps you back on his heels with a quick trigger. He’s been very good.
Meanwhile, there are two injury notes to be aware of. Bucks center Andrew Bogut reportedly will make a surprise return on Monday from a strained leg. Bogut went through shootaround with the starters, though it’s not clear if he will start. It was thought Bogut would be out at least another week.
Chicago guard Kirk Hinrich is out with a sprained thumb. He is Chicago’s best perimeter defender and would have guarded Jennings plenty.
Both these teams have lost four games in a row, and it’s the final game of a long road trip for Chicago. The Bulls lost each of their past four by at least 15, and have allowed an average of 111.8 points on 52.6 percent shooting during the slide. Chicago is 11-2 against Milwaukee, however, since the start of the 2006-07 season.
