A Boulder, Colorado, pastor’s decision to uninvite a lesbian couple’s preschooler from returning to his school next year has ignited a storm of controversy. “It is not about punishing the child for the sins of his or her parents,” the Rev. Bill Breslin said by way of explanation in a sermon posted online. “It is simply that the lesbian couple is saying that their relationship is a good one that should be accepted by everyone; and the Church cannot agree to that.”

Outraged rights advocates immediately charged a double standard: Would the church do the same to the child of parents who, say, committed adultery? “Until every student’s parents are tested on Catholic teaching, this action by Catholic officials cannot be understood as anything other than discrimination on the back of a child,” says one. In a statement, the archdiocese of Denver says any “parents living in open discord with Catholic teaching in areas of faith and morals” would thereby disqualify their kids from attending Catholic schools, Irish Central reports.
