The Vancouver Games wrap up this weekend, with the United States looking like it will win the medal count over Germany this year. The Americans haven’t done that at the Winter Games since way back in 1932, which is astonishing. In both 2002 and 2006, the United States placed second overall in the medals behind Germany. The U.S. usually does win the medal count at the Summer Games, by comparison.
Of course the main event this weekend is the men’s hockey gold medal game, with Team Canada the heavy favorite to bring home the gold. The U.S. hasn’t won gold since the Miracle on Ice team back in 1980.
Saturday’s men’s slalom is the only Alpine event — men’s or women’s — where all three returning medalists from the 2006 Torino Games are still active on the World Cup racing circuit. However, only gold medalist Benjamin Raich and silver medalist Reinfried Herbst were able to stay healthy in time for the Games. The U.S. will be led by a slalom specialist, Jimmy Cochran, along with Bode Miller and Ted Ligety. Cochran, a 2006 Olympian, has consistently posted Top 10 results on the World Cup circuit.
Team USA is unlikely to medal in the snowboarding men’s parallel giant slalom as the top competitor is Tyler Jewell, who placed 11th at his Olympic debut in Torino then finished sixth at the World Championships in 2007 and 10th at the Worlds in 2009.
