Boise State and TCU probably didn’t want to get stuck playing each other in Monday night’s Fiesta Bowl, as both BCS crashers probably wanted to show what they had against a BCS conference team, but at least the Frogs and Broncos both gained a big to one of the big-money bowls — it’s the first time two BCS bowl bids have gone out to so called mid-majors.

The Mountain West Conference is 18-7 (.720) over the last six postseasons, including this one. That’s the highest winning percentage of any conference. The Horned Frogs will try to give the MWC a 5-0 bowl record this winter. They have the nation’s top-ranked defense. Only one team, Clemson, had more than 300 yards of total offense against the Horned Frogs’ defense this season. TCU is sixth in the nation in scoring defense at 12.4 points per game and has given up as many as 20 points only twice all season. The Horned Frogs have allowed just 2.6 yards per carry and 80.5 rushing yards per game. Each of TCU’s past seven wins has been by at least 27 points.
The Frogs actually gain more yards on offense per game than does Boise State. QB Andy Dalton ranks fourth in the nation in passing efficiency and has thrown just five interceptions.
Boise State finished its second straight unbeaten regular season. The Broncos have a high-powered offense led by QB Kellen Moore, who has thrown for 39 TDs and just three interceptions to lead the nation in passer efficiency. The Broncos also run for 194.5 yards per game. RBs Jeremy Avery and Doug Martin have combined to rush for 1,853 yards and 20 touchdowns. Boise State leads the nation in scoring offense at 44.2 points per game and has scored at least 40 points in 10 games this season.
These two met in the Poinsettia Bowl last year, a 17-16 TCU win. Moore committed turnovers on the final BSU two possessions. The Broncos rushed for 28 yards on 20 carries in that game, and 20 of those yards came on one carry.
